The Final Product on my Creations

This Summer has been so busy but I am very blessed that I have had so many friends who have asked me to create their wedding invitations invitations! I wonder if next year I will be making more baby announcements...haha This invitation was very simple and elegant. I used a metallic white paper and envelope that added to its elegance.
This was the invitation I created for my sister-in-law for her batchlorette party. This invite was fun! I attached the pages of the invite with ribbon and even got to pull out my Bedazzaler. to accent the ring.

This invitation mimicked the brides bridesmaid dresses. These invitations were packaged in a blue enclosure tied with a bow that made you feel as if you were opening a present.

I have been overwhelmingly busy lately! With a work promotion along with several lovely brides to design for I have been working hard. To fill you in here is an invitation order just completed. The bride had 7 different colors in her wedding therefore instead of combining them on the invitation we created 7 different invitations.

Here you will see all of the completed invitations tied up and ready to go with matching ribbon for each color..oh course.

It's Party TIme

Oh my gosh...where have I been? I can not believe it has almost been a month since my last post! Shame on ME! My busy life is no excuse but I have tons to post about with a few Save the Date orders just complete and a new piece of art along with what everyone is waiting on...my niece's 1 year old birthday party. So I will not let you wait any longer....We decorated with candy and of course had the Valentine's Day Theme. The layout is not as fancy as the inspiration board I created but I think me and My sister did good.The menu was fruit, chips and dip, pizza dip, cheese puffs, and lots of cake and candies. We even moved the picture I took of Carlee a few months back and had it as a center piece for the table a long with adding color to the dining room.It turned out FABULOUS!! She was one happy birthday girl! And of course her outfit matched the pink, brown, heart theme. Fashion is important!Don't you just love the hat??? I ordered it from Dainty Couture on Etsy! They make all sorts of cute hats and monogrammed items. You have to check them out!
I made the cake and I am glad I did not decide on a cake decorating career path. But I think Carlee liked it. She even got it in her ears and on her parents (pictured above).Here you will see the chaos! There were so many cute kids and they loved playing with Carlee's new toys. I guess it is good that she is not old enough to get possessive over her things! It was a fun day and one I will never forget. I just love helping plan parties!
Towards the end of the party everyone was outside. Then I realized I was not in any of the pictures so my sister snaped this shot. I would not want Carlee to think I was not at her party would I?!

A Valentines Day - Birthday

Valentine's day is right around the corner and so is my niece's birthday. She is turning the big Numero Uno on February 16th. So with helping my sister get an awesome first birthday party together I pulled created an inspiration board. Our theme is Pink and Brown Valentine's Style since the party will be on February 14th.

The cake was found at The Wedding Cake I think it is cutest pink and brown cake ever! I hope I can recreate something similar. Hostess with the Mostess has a great idea for table decor: using candies and sweets. From Martha Stewart I found Heart Flowers and Heart Garland which would add inexpensive decor to the party. Above is the invite I created for her party. Yes I know my niece's name is not Sarah but I don't want to plaster her name too much on the web! haha. They could even be used at any time of the year; what one year old girl would not love a pink heart birthday? can't think of one.

So let’s start the long weekend off early with a sampling of tasty "Adult Beverage" items from the talented people of Etsy and Artfire.

Lets start with a colorful Tiedye Martini a Painting by Robert Joyner then wash it down with some Beer Soap by The Beer Soap Co. The next stop or should I say "shot" is some Pomegranate Martini Lip Balm from Dirty Loves Clean and then we are off for "Waffles" with this print Lets Get Drunk and Eat Waffles by The Frantic Meerkat.

If your tolerance is high and you are in the mood for more then let A & M Accessories charm you with another Martini and then head over to bijouxdesignsforyou for a good book(mark) and a glass of wine then end the night with a with Irish Cream from It Smells Like but be sure to grab a Cup Cozy from Vivid Texture to keep your Irish Cream hot toddy warm. By that time you have to be ready for waffles or most likely bed!

Well just this week I created my first completely digital print "Go Ahead Wine Away."

It is for sale at my Artfire Shop along with my Etsy Shop. I know you thought I was giving up on Etsy but with the wise words of the Artfire staff I believe I will keep it up for just a bit longer. It is kind of funny...I tell my self and my hubby, No sells in a month and I am closing shop and then I get a sell. It is crazy but in a good way.

Trying to expand my business I have joined the artist and crafters of ARTFIRE. It is a new selling site that is similar to Etsy but just getting started. I am thinking about closing shop at Etsy once my items either sale or expire and sticking with Artfire for awhile.

New Completed Piece

This piece "Elegant Poise"was just completed this past week. It is an original 12"x12" canvas board. I used a mixture of techniques for this piece. First I used an old Etiquette book I found and sewed several pieces together using my sewing machine and pink thread. Then I Collaged the pieces onto the canvas. I then created the hat using a mixture of paints and inks. The face was drawn with an oil pastel with bright red lips painted in with red acrylic.

I sent this piece over Saturday to the Davidson County Arts Council for a "Friend" art show. If you are in the area the opening reception is tomorrow night January 13th from 5pm until 7pm at 220 South Main St. Lexington, NC. I hope to post some prints at my ArtFire Shop soon.

What to do with Christmas Cards after the Holidays?

I have always had this question of what to do with left over Christmas Cards or any greeting cards. I feel kind of bad just throwing them away since someone spent time and money to send it to me. On top of that I hate just wasting completely good paper. So after some research here are three ways to get full use out of your Christmas cards.

1. Cut them into post cards to sent for next year. Be sure to cut them to the correct measurement: LENGTH Minimum 5 inches Maximum 6 inches

HEIGHT Minimum 3 1/2 inches Maximum 4 1/4 inches

It is always important to check guidelines at the USPS (U.S. Post Office) before mailing anything.

2. Make a gift box out of them that can easily hold gift cards. Martha Stewart has a great template for making a small gift box. Curby also has a great tutorial and template.

3. Make gift tags. Crafting a Green World has a great tutorial for making gift tags

A Piece Sold

Red Dress has SOLD! It was one of my pieces displayed at Best in Show and it is now going home to a new owner. I do have several other pieces up for sale as well so be sure to check them out at 20 Salem Street Thomasville, NC. It was one of my favorite pieces but I am thrilled that someone will be able to display it and enjoy it for years to come. I still have prints available at my etsy shop . Stay tuned because I am in the process of creating note cards of my collages that will be for sale either in my Etsy shop or for Spring Daze in downtown Thomasville.

A Save the Date Magnets

I have just finished and delivered these Save the Date Magnets. This was an order of 250 of these little guys. Since they are small (about the size of a business card) I handmade pockets for them to be mailed. The trick with magnets is to make sure the person receiving them knows they are magnets. Some times they are very thin (which is good when it comes to the cost of mailing them) but some people may mistake them for a photo and not a photo magnet. Thanks to some thoughtful thinking from my hubby we designed the pocket so the person has to pull out the magnet to read the entire design and hopefully understand it is to go on the fridge not in the trash. Not that they would want to throw away this cute couples picture anyways!!! Contact me by e-mail for a price quote if you are interested in a photo magnet for yourself.

My ECO CHIC Christmas Cards

This year I decided to do double duty on the "Green Movement" by creating a Christmas card made from a paper bag (recycling #1) and then transforming it into a card that can be reused (recycling #2) . I always am stumped at what to do with cards when I am done with a holiday, birthday, or event so hopefully will alleviate that stress for others.The cards are very similar to my paper bag tutorial except I folded up an inch and a half to create a pocket. The pocket is great because the recipient can simply remove my note and then add their own and then resend.

The design was hand drawn and then scaned into the computer. With the help of photoshop I created my wording and design. Each piece of paperbag was cut to the size of 8.5x11 and then put into the printer just like regular paper. Then I added a slash of red paint on the nose of the reindeer. How fun would it be if I got one of these back next year!

Here is my favorite model...Carlee. These are pictures I took of her for the family Christmas Card. Since I do not have a studio I have to use my creativeness to obtain a studio look. With only black fabric, a couch, and lighting that is just right we got some good shots. Of course when the little one's begin to craw I have have a hard time keeping up with them and keeping them in the shot...but it is much fun and good exercise. haha

She uses Gocco which is a Japanese screen printing method to create her designs. This method is very unique in that it gives the cards character along with making them slightly different therefore original. Yesterday I had a gallery showing at Best in Show in Thomaville, NC. I have a total of 4 pieces up for sale until Mid January. Holiday Craft Idea

Can I just say WOW.... HOW CUTE ARE THESE!

This is a project I found on Martha Stewart's site the craft is titled Dot Painted China. With the use of a template and Food-safe ceramic paint you can make these beautiful plates. You can find the stencils for this project here.

While I would love to make these for the holidays, time is not on my side so I plan to take the idea of Dot Painting or more like Monogramming and transform old bottles in to dish detergent holders to give away as gifts. A long with the bottles I plan to give some hand towels like above. What gifts do you plan on creating this year? I would love to hear your ideas...comment below.

Gone To Sell

On Tuesday my husband and I traveled to Durham to the Scrape Exchange to drop off some of my art work to sell.

Lately I have felt like my artwork was overtaking our small 2 bedroom house so I had to let some of them go.

I found Scrap Exchange through an Esty team who were having a craft show there for the holidays called "Craftland". I did not have enough time to get my things together for the show so I contacted the store to see about placing some of my work there to sell....and they said sure bring it over.

Here are a few pieces that are available. I took about 24 items including some of my collage bracelets. The prices range from $15 to $150 (for a large 16x20 wine collage).

Even if you are not in the mood to buy some art you HAVE to check this place out. They have everything in a recycled artist dreams. Paper,bottles, random trinkets, fabric, tiles, even an old voter booth (only $8 dollars). This Saturday October 25th they are having a huge fabric sale. Surprisingly I only left there with a few tiles to make coasters but I am sure to return.

Stiletto Fabulous

I love the line "Stiletto Fabulous"! I don't know where I picked it up...or if I just made it up because of my LOVE for shoes...or Stilettos.

People at work actually know my mood by the shoes I wear. If I come in wearing tennis shoes they know I must be feeling under the weather. While the flat shoe trend is hitting the fashion world pretty hard right now and trust me I am with this trend as well... but in my heart the stiletto will never die. For a girl who has a collection of over 60 pairs of shoes and at least 1/2 stilettos this phrase is one I will enjoy for many years to come.

A spin off the Typical Cork Board

Making a Cork board is a very practical way to reuse/recycle old wine corks and create a unique and usable piece of art. There have been many tutorials to make a"Wine Cork Board" so I decided to give it a try but with a little twist.

I first got the idea from Martha Stewart ; she had a great tutorial for making Cork hot pads with a metal pipe clamp. My first intentions were to make these since I became very frustrated with making a typical cork board, the measurements and the glue (ahhh), but then I got an idea...the circles are very sturdy and would make a unique look if I packed them together to create the cork board.
What I used:

*Lots and Lots of Corks...while I LOVE wine, I promise I did not consume the amount of corks present in the project. I had the help of a local bar, they kept the corks for me until they had a huge bucket filled up with them.

* A shadow box frame; I found mine at Hobby Lobby. They have great deals on frames certain weeks, sometimes up to 1/2 off. Carefully remove the glass from the frame. Some shadow boxes come with frames mounted in them, you can still use these but have to break the glass to remove it.

* Several sized metal pipe hangers (found in the plumbing section of the hardware store).

* Gorilla Glue; I tried several glues during my first attempt at a typical cork board. First good craft glue (the corks would not stay)..frustrated,,,then I tried hot glue without any luck...even more frustrated. So that is when I gave up on making a cork board and decided to make the hot pads instead. When I realized how using the pipe hangers created a solid piece of cork I began again on my cork board making. I avoided the two glues I used before and invested into Gorilla glue. it was my last try and so far so good.

Step 1: The first thing I did was create the circles with the metal pipe hangers just like mentioned in Martha's Tutorial .

Step 2:I placed the circles in the shadow frame in the location I liked and then glued them down with the gorilla glue. Let them dry.

Step 3:Once the circles have dried into place you can being filling in the gaps with corks. You are not going to be able to fill every inch of the frame but this only gives it more character. So if you are perfectionist you might not want to try this craft. The little holes might just drive you nuts.

This process can take some time but the end result will be well worth it.

The funny thing about my board is that there are very few real corks. Most wine I drink has some type of rubber/plastic cork but they work just as well.

Halloween Not too far Away

So as for the last post on the Chandelier Invites I have transformed them into something a little more Seasonal.

Here is a snapshot of my creepy yet chic chandelier note cards. I am going to transform them into postcards and have them up for sale by the end of the week in my Etsy Shop...stay tuned.

I have seen some GREAT Halloween Crafts lately and want to try them all here is one that caught my eye on CraftZine...it is from a blog called STOLLOWEEN you have to check this out.

These awsome pumpkins are made from paper mache...I could not believe it when I first saw them. I really want to try this!!! Hope I have time this weekend!

A new Bridal Shower Design

Here is a new design just created . It is a simple chandelier design that would be beautiful for a bridal shower or even a wedding invitation. Colors can easily be changed to fit any event or theme. I love chandeliers. Hopefully one day I will have a house that is big enough that I can actually buy a chandelier...but until then I will just have to settle for them on paper.

Stay tuned because by the end of the week I am going to have a spooky version of my chandelier! Halloween is not too far away and I have to get started on some scary designs.

Some of you might have seen this Hello Name Tag design at my wedding. I used it for the koosies so people could personalized their own koosie and not lose their drink. The back of the koosie said compliments of Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin.

A new Wedding Design Preview

So I have been working on a few templates for wedding invitations and experimenting with two color combinations:

DIY Paper Bag Note Cards

I mentioned this tutorial from the City Beautification Blog I also post on but I thought I would show you the steps on my blog as well.

What you will need:

A paper Bag from the grocery store
glue stick
white paper
decoration supplies (paint, glitter, etc.)

Step 1: Cut your paper bag into pieces measuring the size card you want to make. My pieces measured 9" x 6".

2.Next fold each piece in half creating a card.

3. You will then need to cut white paper (this can be used paper from the office, junk mail, etc) slightly smaller than the paper bag size and glue using a glue stick to the inside of your paper bag card. My white paper measures 8.75"x5.75"

Once Dry the next step is to decorate the outside any way you would like. Make it into a birthday card or personalized stationery by monogramming it with your initials.

A new Type of Notecard

I created these cards with a few pieces of left over invitation cardstock. I love pocket invitations so I thought what a good idea to have a pocket notecard.
Think about it...once you send it to someone they can cut new pieces of paper and send it to another person. It is like recycling stationery...I know for a fact that when I mess up on a notecard and have to throw it away it drives me nuts. So, all you would have to do it get a new piece of paper and you are all set. I am pretty proud of this innovative recycling matter.

For some of you who unaware of what I do for 40hours a week out side of "Inspiration turn Design" here is an incite into my full time job. I work for a university UNCG on a research project called S.T.A.R. We are interested in finding connections between children's knowledge and understanding of emotion and how it will help them transition into Kindergarten. Our study is about to begin it's 3rd year and children will come into out lab and run through a series of tasks and games. One task is a mother/child book reading and we never seem to find the best book for the task so this year...I MADE ONE! The book was published by blurb books and I hope to find a cheaper production company that will print it for cheaper. If you are interested in one let me know.

All the illustrations were drawn by me and colored using colored pencil and digital color.

Working on things to go in my Etsy Shop

I have temporarily closed down my etsy shop so I can revamp it and hopefully make some sales. I am working on a series of cards made from recycled paper bags and found paper. Making invitations seems to produce a lot of random paper just laying around and for some reason I have an obsession with paper bags. Here is a seek peak.

The cards above are made from paper bags. I cut them and lined the inside with left over card stock. The leaf is a stencil I made using a piece of transparency (you know the stuff teachers use to use before PowerPoint).

The one below is left over paper from my wedding invitations. I created a stencil from a piece of cardstock and then painted the black lines freehand.

What a CUTIE!!! Meet Vincent who is almost 1 yrs old.

I completed this photo shoot last week for my friend Lori and despite Vincent's missed nap time we got a some good shots . The pictures were taken at her brothers BEAUTIFUL house where he was in the process of moving in. It is always fun to use a setting that is not perfect and staged. I played off the paintings laying against the walls.

The Picture above is of Vincent being held up by his Dad while using a painting as a unique backdrop.

The Picture below is one of my favorites. It is of Vincent and his dad playing. We were trying everything to get a smile out of Vincent...I know I would not be smiling if I missed nap time but he is a trooper and we got some great smiles from him.

Oh and did you notice the new logo...again. I think this is a keeper...I can change the colors as I wish but have a nice and neat symbol. The logo is a combination of ITD. What do you think?

Here is a collage piece I am working on.....It is titled "Eco Chic Bride" I used hand made paper (my friend Kim made it for me for Christmas) and left over paper from my wedding invitations. I have found out that modge podge and handmade paper make great sculpting materials. I get so excited when I am working on a piece...i can't wait to see how it turns out.

Packaging 101

I have been racking my brain for a unique and affordable way to package my sationery. I have tried making boxes but my cuts are not perfect enough and I tried just tying a bow but it seemed too flimsy. Then I came across these books from Lotta Jansdotter , Jill Bliss, and Oh Boy. How unique and cute. So I tried making something similar and here is what I came up with.

I used a piece of mat board and measured my flat note cards adding about 1/2 inch for the sides and then 1 inch for the spine. For the spine I made 2 cuts with a box cutter, but making sure not to go all the way through the mat board (I like using a box cutter better than an exacto for some reason?!?) Then it folded up nicely into a book cover. I covered the mat board with rice paper and modgepodge and made two holes to tie the ribbon with. The ribbon is not glued and can be untied for the simple fact that when the note cards are used the ribbon can be tightened so the note cards are secure.

This is going to be a little present for my sister. My niece will be going to daycare in a few weeks for the first time and these cards have her name on them. This will be a nice touch when Casey has to write a note for Carlee's daycare.

So far this morning during my blog breaks from Coding Heart Rate (this is one of the lovely tasks I do while working in research) I came across this Magazine Called "Artful Blogger" twice once from Sweet Repeats and then Simply Stated. So I guess this means I need to check this magazine out! Maybe it is a sign..since yesterdays post was a bit negative and sad.

I get a lot of inspiration from reading what other craft, design,and art blogs. Oh an more on my sad note from yesterday...I went home..started working on a new collage piece and researched 2 art galleries to submit pieces to. So today I am feeling a lot better.

I have figured out that the passion to create a craft that consumers want is important like photography and stationery but I should not let go of my true craft Collage...It makes me who I am and give me freedom to create without limits. More to come on the piece I am creating... (just a hint...it has to do with weddings).

Days Like These and Times Like Those

Working 40hrs a week, planning a wedding, and creating a design business without losing sight of my collage art has been overwhelming!

The wedding planning has been fun and I am so excited about getting Married...but now all the craftiness is complete and I am left with making check lists for everyone. I think I would rather make the invitations over 6 times than write a list of music I want played or the photography shots I want (and I am a photographer) haha. And work is work...I would rather be browsing Design and Craft blogs all day...and putting my ideas to the test while brainstorming on my new marketing adventures.

Ahhh Days like these....Someone get me out of this rut and back to designing/positive thinking...and work haha.

A few months ago a piece of my work got accepted into a gallery in Kings Mountain, NC. Some of you may remember this. Well I hope to soon make prints and have them up for sale on my Etsy Website. This piece is titled "Not a Size Zero" It is a statement that a woman is beautiful with hips! Personal Note Cards for Kaiden and Coleen

I just finished designing these custom note cards for Kaiden and her mom Coleen. I knew Kaiden loved dinosaurs so after putting together my first design with a dinosaur with a long tail and long neck (I was not sure of the technical name at the time) Kaiden asked if she could a get a Triceratops instead of a Brachiosaurus. So above is a Triceratops and below is a Brachiosaurus, who would have ever thought you would learn something about dinosaurs from making personalized stationery. haha

So I have been playing around with filters and photoshop effects and I came across a cross lighting tutorial from photojojo. Here is a before and after cross effect. It is basically a mix of color (red, green, and blue) curves.

Invitations are Sent

This is my workstation for the invitations....It may look like a lot of work but to me it it so much fun putting all of them together. I made a total of 170 invitations all by hand.

And the final product...of course I did make a few minor changes to the invitation and hope to have a few pictures posted soon of the finished piece.

With the new launch of Inspiration turn Design I am giving it another try. I have not posted in FOREVER...I thought I would share some of my general photography...enjoy.

I love hands and I think you can see a lot by looking at a persons hands. These hands are my nieces and dads. It is titled "Grandpaw's hands."

Does anyone still have a snapper lawn mower??? This is what my family has used forever..this is the mower I used when I had to mow the grass growing up. I am not sure if it still works but the shadows and rustic look is very cool.

This photo was taken in my kitchen. My future in laws have this awesome cherries tree and I LOVE sour cherries. I picked a bowl and saw such a cool picture with the lighting and color. Some may think the door knob in the background is tacky but I think it adds a lot to the photo.

This photo is one I took at home...my dad found this picture in his truck of me and my sister. The wear and tear of the photo is so cool.

Here are is a collage I did for my sister while she was pregnant. I took the pictures and then altered them into a keepsake photo of her belly. This would make a cute invite for a baby shower as well. Maybe I will experiment with that later.

Bridal Shower invites are complete and delivered. The bride is having a black and white wedding so the color scheme was incorporated into the invite. The actual pattern was pulled off a piece of fabric. These would also make great wedding invitations.

Though the wedding planning process I found a LOVE for design both digital and handmade invitations; altering photographs, etc. I have recently taken every chance I have to create an invitation for someone. Not to take away from my collage art but more or less to find a career I truly love. Art is a passion and with every new beginning I am slowly but surely finding my niche. My inspiration board and invitation design will be posted soon. For now I want to share a few designs I just completed.

I am trying to use our engagement pictures as much as possible because they are so fabulous! One of my best friends took the pictures for us and she has a great eye for design. Thanks Kim!

This Picture below is one that will be used in the ceremony program. Very simple I just embellished it with our name and the date.

The next picture I transformed into a thank you card. It really adds a personal touch!

I am going for a Eco-chic wedding and want to use items that are reused. For my center pieces I am using mason jars and old wine bottles. For the wine bottles I have created a few custom labels from again from our engagement pictures.

Below are the birth announcements I did for my Niece in February. She is so adorable! I loved making these and altering the photo's I took of her. She is growing fast and I am sure she will make her way into more of my designs.

I altered this picture the most. I had my bother-in-law hold Carlee and darkened the background. This can be done with most pictures as long has you have the patience. It created a nice effect.

This pic is kind of funny. She was not very happy with us trying to lay her down and take her picture. She looks a bit wrinkled haha but still very cute.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I think baby hands and feet are so cute.

This one I used a flower picture I had taken from actually one of her baby showers and the light coming in from the window really made the announcement stand out.
I love this one! I used fabric patterns to create the colorful announcement.

The Beginnings

It is amazing what has happened in the last year I am an aunt and now engaged! All of these transitions have shaped my future not only personally but professionally. It all began with a design for my sisters baby shower. Of course I had created designs before but never with photshop. I fell in love with it. For her baby shower I decided to play off her color scheme for the baby room and flamingos which was the theme she was going for. I pulled off color splotches and fabric patterns from the decor she was in love with and came up with a design that matched the room perfectly. I even created thank you cards to match. This really sparked my interest in design. Below is the decor she had picked out.

Here is the finished product. Colors were pulled from the picture above and I hand drew the flamingo and scanned it in. These invitations were actually cut to resemble a tag and yellow ribbon was added to the top.
